In 1992 Dr Mary Ann Ghaffurian was approached by Deakin University to create a new course for the Health Sciences, Social Sciences, Economics and Education: "THE ARTS EXPLORED". Dr MAG again crossed paths with Professor Cunningham Dax whom she worked with at Royal Park in diagnostic psychiatric art years earlier.
Her book Visual Art as Therapy was republished several times and led to her introducing The Arts Explored to MA (Masters of Art Therapy) students at LaTrobe Uni in 1999.
In 1992 when Deakin University asked me to write a book, produce a course and video for a new pilot, I was excited to dip into how art therapy was being applied across the community in Geelong - From the Children 's Hospital wards to psychiatric safe houses, to high schools, extended care facilities for disabled seniors, to finally catching up with Professor Cunningham Dax in Carlton.
At this time, the Gallery of Psychiatric Art was being set up at the University of Melbourne. It included art cases from my work and time at Royal Park more than a decade earlier.
This work remains relevant and important as the field of psychiatry, mental health, psychology and art together were at a pioneering edge of research
Here at The Sanctuary you can explore art as a therapy. Get something off your mind, heart or chest. Get it out on to paper. Out of mind.
Allow your soul to speak. It may have something to say that you want to express.
You can bring your art in, or a child's, to appreciate, examine, understand.
Or, if something worries you, and you seek clarification or an art analysis, call. There is something powerful about reading the symbols, dreams, visions, and voice that our subconscious or unconscious is trying to tell us. Private Sessions available.
Combione with Meditation. Make it even better.
